Interested In Protecting Your Images

Did you know that you can disable right click on your photographs? The easiest way to do this is use your WordPress “No Right Click Images Plugin”. This plugin uses Javascript to disable the contextual menu when you right-click on an image. It can be disabled by turning off Javascript. To protect fully, disable default image linking that occurs when you insert image in WordPress. To do this: choose “none” in “link to” dropdown box when uploading images.

Add Copyright Notice

WordPress themes come with built in notice in the footer. If your theme doesn’t you can add it with this code:

  • Copyright
  • < ?php $the_year = date (“Y”);
  • echo $the_year; ?>
  • < ?php bloginfo (‘url’); ?>
  • All rights reserved

This code will automatically fill in site name and update to the current year. Just enter it in the footer. php.file in WordPress theme’s directory. A footer copyright notice is not normally noticeable, so you might want a more noticeable one. WordPress suggests putting following text in sidebar so its visible all the time:

[Full Name] and [Blog Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Blog Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.

Watermark Your Images

Watermark for Sell Media is a plugin that will accomplish your issue. It does not alter original image. Instead, watermarks only the lower resolution versions, which are downloaded/displayed on your site. Use your signature or logo.

After solutions can be found in WordPress plugin repository. Choose one with the highest ratings, test carefully and delete inactive or unused plugins.

Add DMCA Badge To Your Site

DMCA offers free protection for your site which includes a takedown service if you find someone using your image or content without your permission. The DMCA will threaten legal action on your behalf. This can be a deterrent for social image stealers and they offer free image watermarking services. Plugins available that insert automatically for you.

Disable Hotlinking

This does not stop people from downloading your images but rather it will stop them from embedding them in their own site by linking out directly to your website. You can prevent this by editing your .htaccess file but there are plugins available to do this. Plugins like Hotlink Protection simply stop external web servers from linking to your files, while others like ByREV WP-PICShield provide functionality and replace hotlinked image with warning message or image of your choice.

Reverse Search

Images.google.com and click camera icon in search box to search by image. You can either enter by URL from your site here or you can even drag in an image from your pc. Google will come back with images that are visually similar.

Final Thoughts

Take precaution but do not become obsessed. Watermark your images in an unobtrusive way is a decent compromise for most people, while web users lacking morals may crop it out.
